Jim Young

Founding Advisor, RIA

President, Young Capital Management

Jim has 37 years of experience in the securities industry, with 30 of those years spent in Colorado. For the past nine years, he has been affiliated with Merrill Lynch. Prior to that, he spent 22 years at UBS Financial Services, serving a wide array of individual and institutional clients. Jim’s preference, for his entire career, has been the fixed income securities markets, with a focus on municipal bonds. While at PaineWebber, which became UBS Financial Services in 2000, Jim was one of the largest municipal bond advisors in the Southwest region.

As the securities industry has changed, Jim has adjusted his investment strategies to incorporate new ideas while maintaining a risk-averse mentality. When Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) were introduced, Jim was an early adopter of the concept as a viable portfolio tool. Jim went on to serve as a keynote speaker at the ETF Conference in Palm Beach, Florida in February of 2001, where he presented on the integration of ETFs into a portfolio to help achieve effective, highly-correlated asset allocation for broad market and specific sector exposure.

Changing with the times has also required a re-examination of the more traditional buy and hold approach. With the low yields on CDs, bonds, and money market funds that investors have faced for many years, Jim has found that many clients seek a more active and flexible management style. Looking to the equity markets has offered better opportunities, but with those opportunities has come increased volatility. Despite this potential for increased volatility, preservation of capital and decreasing volatility remain the primary goals of Jim's approach to asset management. By addressing these concerns, Jim has helped his clients stay invested during the periods of extreme market downturns since the early 2000s.These situations have led Jim to the important decision that serving his clients’ interests means moving away from traditional investing and embracing new, but moderate, ideas. He is very excited to have the opportunity to serve his clients with the support of Resolute and the HighTower platform.

Jim and his wife, Monica, celebrated their 44th anniversary in March 2017. They have two grown daughters, Wendy and Cheryl, and three grandchildren, Elliott, Ashley and Stephanie. Jim and Monica enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, travel, and soon will be organic gardening in a greenhouse that they built at their home in the Wet Mountain Valley. Jim and Monica are ardent supporters of the Colorado Trail Foundation, Barr Camp, the Ralph Wilson Youth Club in Temple, Texas, and several other non-profit organizations in the Pikes Peak and Wet Mountain Valley areas of Colorado.
